Take care of your teeth so they last for life

We all want a sparkling smile and healthy teeth, many people think that to achieve this is time consuming and difficult. It really is straight forward for your mouth to look fantastic if you follow some simple daily habits; brushing on a regular basis, reducing the amount of sugar you eat, cutting down on alcohol and stopping smoking.

After speaking to a Nottingham dentist we compiled a list of some simple steps we can all take to maintain healthy and clean teeth.

Change you brush

Don’t get lazy and ignore the fact that you need to change your toothbrush. If a toothbrush is worn out then there is no way it will clean your teeth effectively and could even cause damage to your gums. As a rule of thumb your toothbrush should be changed every 2 or 3 months, sooner if the bristles are worn.

Brush when you wake up

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is recommended, brush your teeth when you wake up before you eat breakfast. Never brush them after eating acids because the enamel on the outer layer of your teeth will become softer.

Make them shine

If you would like your teeth to be whiter the first thing you should try is a toothpaste that has a whitening ingredient, this will bring out the whiteness of your teeth for you. If you would like to take a more direct approach then speak to your dentist about teeth whitening.

Cut out the sugar in between meals

It’s easy to snack on sugar packed treats or drinks in between meals so you need to try and stop this as best you can. The sugar you eat in snacks can cause dental cavities. If you need to snack then try to eat some fruit or raw vegetables – this will not only save your teeth but leave you feeling much healthier as well.

Stop the smoking!

Smoking is one of the easiest ways for you to lose that sparkling smile. The tobacco will stain your teeth, turning them yellow, and will also increase the chances of you developing cancer in your mouth or gum disease.
